JULIA MIDDLETON WOODWIND TEACHING

1:1 Tuition in Kidlington, Oxfordshire on the Clarinet, Sax and Flute

About me

I've been teaching in the Oxford area since 1997 and music has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I have studied and performed both jazz and classical music on saxophone and clarinet as well as a smattering of folk and folk rock over the years. Since 2015 I've also been learning the flute and have introduced teaching beginners and intermediate players into my pupil cohort.

Where do I teach?

I teach on a (very) part-time flexible basis from my music room in Kidlington. I have a small number of spaces for school age children as I teach predominantly adults on an ad-hoc flexible basis.

My experience

I have been teaching woodwind  for 26 years and have gained greatly in experience during this time. I draw upon the Simultaneous Learning Method created by Paul Harris, my clarinet tutor, mentor and educator over the last 11 years who is recognised worldwide. I have taught all ages, levels and abilities - from 8 to 80! I am insured and DBS checked.

My teaching style and aims

Creativity, establishing a good technique and developing the all-round musician in a friendly and positive learning environment forms the backbone of my teaching, while, at the same time, I recognise that each pupil is an individual and requires lessons tailored to their needs and learning style. It is essential that pupils ensure that they can find regular, quality time to practise and thus make progress, so lessons are rewarding and worthwhile for all.  Students sit exams when/if appropriate and if requested but they do not constitute the core of my teaching. My main aim is to create skilled and rounded musicians who feel comfortable in any situation - whether orchestral, solo or jazz improvisation and to be capable of independent learning. I also encourage pupils to take part in other musical activities such as choirs, wind bands, orchestras and jazz bands to enhance their musical experience and enjoyment.
